Pickleball is one of the fastest growing racquet sports in the country and Flex Court is proud to be one of the largest suppliers of pickleball court surfaces. You may be wondering; what is pickleball and what do we need to begin playing pickleball.
Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong that can be played indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court. Pickleball is played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners of all ages to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced competitive game for experienced players. Pickleball is being taught to school children in physical education classes, retirement communities are adopting pickleball as a sports activity for their residents, families are installing courts in backyards, and YMCA organizations and community centers are increasing memberships by offering pickleball. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s (SFIA) 2016 Participant Report, there are more than 2.5 million pickleball participants in the United States.
Pickleball was “created” in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State and Bill Bell, a businessman. After a round of golf, the men returned home to discover their families sitting around with nothing to do. The property had an old badminton court so Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment but could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. The following weekend, Barney McCallum was introduced to the game at Pritchard’s home. Soon, the three men created rules, relying heavily on badminton. They kept in mind the original purpose, which was to provide a game that the whole family could play together.
So, how do you get started on your own pickleball court? The good news is, Flex Court’s all-weather pickleball courts can be installed in a matter of hours at any residential or commercial site given that you have the required space. A pickleball court is roughly the size of a doubles badminton court. In fact, one tennis court can be divided into four pickleball courts. One of pickleball’s attractive qualities is that you need about a quarter of the space required for a full tennis court; so many home owners can fit one in their backyard. Flex Court’s patented interlocking tile systems interlock securely into place piece-by-piece allowing for easy and fast installation. If you already have a concrete pad, you can install your court in less than an hour, or have it professionally installed. We can even provide pickleball court accessories such as; perimeter fencing, outdoor lighting systems and pickleball nets and posts. Flex Court’s tiles are engineered based on an orthopedic design, making our pickleball courts an ideal choice for young children, adults, and seniors.
